Biserica Eroii Neamului

An Orthodox church on Calea București, on the airport side of town — a plain rendered building with a red-tiled bell tower over the entrance, a second tower over the nave and a half-dome at the apse. Not old and not a monument: it is a working parish church, built in the modern Romanian idiom, with a separate chapel and a car park in the same yard. Worth the two minutes if you are already on this stretch of road, which most people are — Electroputere Mall and the SUCPI trading centre are both a short walk east.

The crucifix on the pavement

A tall painted crucifix stands inside its own railed enclosure at the roadside, between the church yard and the pavement. Painted rather than carved, with the skull and crossbones at the foot in the Orthodox manner, and flowers left at the base. It is the thing you actually notice from a passing car; the church itself sits back behind the fence.

Going in

It is a parish church rather than a sight, so there are no posted visiting hours and no ticket. Services are the times to find the doors open. Dress as you would for any Orthodox church and keep the camera down inside.
