The wide paved square at the eastern end of the pedestrian run, and the part of the old centre that fills up in the evening. Nineteenth-century fronts on three sides, a domed corner building closing the view, terraces with parasols down both edges and benches under the trees for people not drinking. No traffic, so it works as a place to sit rather than a place to cross. Busiest from late afternoon into the night. The side streets running off it are worth the detour for the painted walls.
The terraces on the square charge more than the same coffee or beer costs a street or two off it — that is what the position buys, and it is worth knowing before you sit down rather than after. Nothing here is expensive by western European standards. If you want the cheaper end, walk a block off the square or take a bench: the benches and the trees are free and the view is the same.
