The shell from the forecourt, with the BĂNIE lettering belowThe long side from the forecourt steps — the shell reads as one continuous curve
The city football ground, west of the centre on Bulevardul Ilie Balaci, rebuilt and opened in 2017 on the site of the old stadium. A single curved shell of ribbed aluminium over an open bowl, seating a little over 30,000 — the most striking modern building in Craiova, and visible from a long way off. Home to Universitatea Craiova; the word BĂNIE stands in concrete letters on the forecourt. The forecourt is open to walk across on any day; the interior only on match days or by arrangement.
The streets behind the ground
Walk round the back of the stadium and the housing on the far side is worth a look in its own right — columned porches, pedimented roofs and a great deal of gilded ironwork, with the aluminium shell rising behind them. Photographed on the Random sights page.
