Average daytime high (red) and night-time low (blue). Long-term normals — a July afternoon of 35° is common, not exceptional. The marked line is today.
Rainfall
Average monthly rainfall, millimetres. Long-term normals, not this year’s actual rain.
Daylight
One box per calendar week, darkest in December and lightest in June. Computed for Craiova’s latitude, not measured — day length only, not sunrise and sunset clock times.
The seasons
June to early September
Hot. Thirty-five degrees is a normal July afternoon and the concrete districts hold the heat well into the night.
April–May, September–October
The good months. Warm days, cool evenings, everything outdoors, the park at its best.
November to March
Cold, grey and windy off the plain, with some snow. The station hall in particular is unheated in any real sense.
The wind
Craiova sits on the Oltenia plain, and the plain is not a windy place: mean wind speeds across the extra-Carpathian lowlands run about 2 to 4 m/s, against 5 to 9 m/s on the exposed mountains. The named wind here is the austru — hot, out of the west and south-west, and at its most noticeable in summer, when it is the thing that dries the fields out. Eastern Romania has the winter crivăț, a cold north-easterly, but that belongs to Moldavia, Dobruja and the Bărăgan rather than to Oltenia.
Tip: renting between June and September, air conditioning is not a luxury — it is the first question to ask a landlord.
